Released just in time for your Christmas list, Edition Peters’ The Musical Notebook may be every music-lover’s dream. The Musical Notebook is a high quality, hardback A5 notebook, containing 160 pages of 140gsm ivory cream paper. It combines 130 pages of 5mm dot-grid for bullet journalling with 30 pages of 10-stave manuscript paper for musical ideas and composing. If that wasn’t enough, it also includes a circle of 5ths and a selection of common Italian tempo markings.
The cover is in the familiar Edition Peters ‘house style’ with a gold border and text. The dark green cover, whilst sumptuous, does make the gold text, both on the cover and spine, quite hard to read, but this is a minor point. It’s fine if you get the angle of the light right. Inside The Musical Notebook, the front and back inside covers are filled with musical quotes from the likes of Clara Schumann, Ravel, Wagner, Verdi, John Cage, Rebecca Clarke, Mozart, Reger and Ethel Smyth. The recipient or owner’s name can be inscribed in the front of the book in the ‘this book belongs to’ box.
This is a high quality item with excellent quality paper. I may have also valued a section of plain pages and ruled pages in preference to the majority dot-grid, but that is personal preference. Retailing at £17.95, this is certainly at the expensive end of the musical gifts market, but overall, this is a quality gift item which I hope recipients might treasure for many years to come.
