David Barton MEd BA (Hons) LLCM DipABRSM DipRSCM CertGSMD(T) MISM AFHEA FRSA
David was born in Winchester in 1983, founding David Barton Music in 2001. He combines a busy portfolio of private teaching, accompanying and composing both from his base in Lichfield, and across the UK.
At school, David won prizes for music and drama and was an integral part of his school’s musical activities and productions, including being musical director for Cinderella and Bugsy Malone. In 1998, David played 2nd flute in Malcolm Arnold’s Little Suite No. 2 under Sir Simon Rattle as part of the World’s Largest Orchestra at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
David graduated with a BA (Hons) Open Degree in 2008 and a MEd in 2010, both with The Open University. He also holds a DipABRSM in Piano Teaching and a CertGSMD(T) in Flute Teaching. He was also one of the first students to graduate on the Royal School of Church Music’s DipRSCM in Sacred Music Studies course. In addition, he holds the LLCM and ALCM diplomas from the London College of Music and is currently reading for PhD in Music Education at the Royal College of Music, London.

David specialises in flute, piano and singing tuition for a wide range of ages and abilities. In his teaching, David has been able to share his love for music through encouraging and motivating his pupils. All lessons are tailored to the individual and David offers a high-quality and professional service. David is a Full Member of both the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM) and the Association of Teachers of Singing (AOTOS).
Composer, Arranger & Publisher
David has over 100 compositions and arrangements published in the UK, USA and Canada, and thousands of copies of his music have been sold worldwide. These include works for solo voice, choir, organ, woodwind, orchestra and chamber ensembles. Regular performances, particularly of choral works, take place especially in the USA. Publishers include several major companies including GIA Publications, Inc., Spartan Press (Phylloscopus Publications), Augsburg Fortress and Paraclete Press. David also typesets and publishes a number of pieces under the David Barton Music umbrella, and these are sold direct via his website.
A number of works have received favourable reviews in Church Music Quarterly, Clarinet & Saxophone Magazine, and Pan Magazine. In 2011, his setting of A Celtic Blessing was selected as one of the prestigious JW Pepper ‘Editor’s Choice’ for that year.David is a Writer Member of the Performing Rights Society (PRS) and the Mechanical Copyright Protection Society (MCPS).
David has accompanied instrumentalists, singers and ensembles for nearly 20 years. He has provided piano accompaniment for many graded examinations in music, both for his own pupils and those of other teachers.
He was the rehearsal pianist and accompanist for the Gloucester Operatic and Dramatic Society between 2003 and 2005; musical director for a church music and drama group between 1998 and 2005; organist of Quedgeley Methodist Church and St Luke’s Methodist Church between 1998 and 2005, and Director of Music at St John’s Northgate Methodist Church between 2005 and 2010. Since 2010, David has been a keen supporter and voluntary accompanist for the ABRSM Forum’s Adult Learner Concerts held annually around the UK.
Freelance Writer & Researcher
David regularly contributes to a wide range of music-related magazines and journals including Music Teacher, Piano Professional and Cathedral Music. The subjects are often related to music education and recent articles have concerned organising pupil concerts, tutor books, the value of piano duets and ensuring the well-being of teachers. His PhD research is examining the autonomy of studio-based instrumental teachers and in particular the decision-making process into which they enter. David is a Writer Member of the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society (ALCS) and a Full Member of the Society for Education and Music Psychology Research. (SEMPRE)
Teacher Mentor & Consultant
David has supported many instrumental teachers in their professional development over the past 10 years. He has provided a unique online mentoring service for teaching diplomas, and continues to generate other professional development offerings for teachers worldwide. He has been employed on a consultancy basis by several major examination boards, and has recently been involved in the 2018 LCM Piano Syllabus.
